C. Karatheodori

One of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, Constantinos Karatheodori was born in Berlin from Greek parents and died in Munich. He was considered a charismatic and brilliant student in Belgium, where he studied engineering, and in Germany, where he studied mathematics and became University professor.

In 1920 he came to Greece, invited by Prime Minister, Eleftherios Venizelos, to organize the University of Smirni. Following the destruction of 1922, he moved to Athens, where he taught at the Polytechnic School and became member of the Athens Academy. A friend of Albert Einstein, he became his teacher in mathematics. Einstein often referred to Karatheodori's genius and called him a "great teacher".
