Theoni V. Aldredge

A Greek emigre, Theoni Vahliotis Aldredge, made a successful career in both the United States and Europe, as an art director and costume designer. She worked at the Goodman Memorial Theater in Chicago in 1949 (where she met her husband, the actor Tom Aldredge) and in 1950 she made her first costume designs.

Since then her career has focused on the art design and costume design for films, plays and operas. A highly eccentric and demanding professional, Theoni Vahliotis Aldredge, uses large budgets for the realization of her beautiful designs. She was awarded the Tony Award three times for the plays "Annie " in 1977, "Barnum" in 1980, and "La Cage aux Folles" in 1984 and an Oscar Award for the costumes she designed for "The Great Gatsby".
