The classic Marathon’s 42km is the link between a legend and a leading athletic event signaling the power of human will and social responsibility, since participants contribute to UNESCO’s charity programme.

"The Athens Classic Marathon brings the past together with the present; it marries myth with history and showcases the greatness of human spirit. This race is about solidarity, about a community of action," says Director General of UNESCO, adding that all donations made through the 2011 Athens Classic Marathon will be given for educating young girls in Africa.

The Marathon race follows the footsteps of Athenian messenger Pheidippides, who is said to have run from the battle of Marathon to Athens to announce victory over the invading Persian army in 490 BC.

The year 2010 marked the 2,500th anniversary since the Battle of Marathon. Parallel to the Marathon race, the 5km and 10km road race which run the historical centre of the city of Athens, passing along significant monuments and city buildings.
