Best cafes in Athens
National Gardens Café: This small little café is a charming reminder of what Athens was like 100 years ago. Go for a coffee or a tea and dessert under the trees in this oasis in the center of Athens.
Tip: Exit the back of the park and watch the Evzones (National Guards) change in front of the Presidential Palace away from the crowds at Syntagma.

Filion Cafe: Away from the crowds of Kolonaki this low key café on busy Skoufa Street is a great place for people watching, good coffee and excellent Greek pastries.
Tip:Make sure to stop into the grand Ayios Dionysios church next door for a look at one of Athens’ most beautifully adorned Orthodox churches. Athens oldest Dance school is located around the corner from Filion on Dimokritou Street. Housed in a grand neoclassical home make sure to stop in and watch one of the dance classes in action.

Zonar’s:The oldest Athenian Kafenion. Recently redone, which has unfortunately stripped it of most of its original charm, but Zonar’s still has some of the best people watching around. Try the Princess salad or one of their excellent burgers if you’re hungry.

Café Melina: Filled with photos of Greece’s favourite actress and former and last great Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri. A wonderful spot in Athens for a coffee or a drink. Bypass the food as it is mediocre.

Da Capo: Competing cafes Da Capo and Peros, located across a pedestrianized street from one another, are two not to be missed cafes in Athens. You don’t visit either one of these places for the coffee or food but merely to park it and watch the parade of Athenians pacing up and down this informal catwalk.
