Greek vineyards and wines

Three things shape the personality of wines: grape variety, territory characteristics and winegrowers care.

Legend has it that the first vine for the Robola grapes was brought to the island of Cephalonia, the only island that has this specific variety by Cephalus the son of Hermes and that is why the island is named after him.

The Road of Wine

From the time of Ancient Greece and Rome visits have been made to vineyards. Since the early 19th century, however, visits to vineyards were part of package tours, which were mainly the prerogative of the aristocratic classes of the time.

Agiorgitico grapes

Agiorgitico grapes in Peloponnesus give Nemea, another very popular PDO red wine.

Asyrtiko

Asyrtiko in the island of Santorini gives a homonym PDO dry white wine and a sweet white wine by the name of Vinsanto (Vino di Santorini).

Other varieties of indigenous grapes

Several other grapes are indigenous in Greece. When brought up in the right place by the right people they deliver excellent wines.

Zagori: Villages hidden behind mountains
