Rebetiko Gathering on Hydra Island
The island of Hydra will host the 11th Rebetiko Gathering from October 13-16. The event is a combination of conference, music workshops, formal concerts and jam sessions.
It is organized by the Free University of Hydra, an organisation dedicated to the study and research of all matters concerning the culture, history and social life of all the countries which border the Mediterranean. Moreover, the Ad Hoc Rebetiko, a fifteen member band based in London and supported by the London University School of Oriental & African Studies organizes its annual Athens –Istanbul- Hydra tour.
Bringing together Greek, Turkish, Cypriot, and British musicians, the band performs Greek and Anatolian music with local musicians in Greece and Turkey. The Rebetiko was born at the beginning of the 20th century out of the emigration and population exchanges that followed WWI.
As musical genre, it originated in Greek cities, most of them coastal, in today's Greece and Asia Minor. Rebetiko mostly sings of hardship, prison, poverty, war and love.
