Tribute to Maria Callas
City dwellers stuck in traffic in downtown Athens have found an unusual comfort against the urban ‘ennui’. Hellenic National Opera soloists and choristers roam the streets of Athens in city tour buses, performing famous opera excerpts such as Libiamo from La Traviata, Quando e bella from L’ elisir d’ amore and Quando men vo from Puccini’s La Boheme.
The public singing initiative is only the ‘prelude’ of a series of artistic events held by the National Opera in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture & Tourism and the City of Athens, which will run through October 2. Another highlight of this initiative is a tribute to Maria Callas, on September 16 (day of her death), at the outdoor premises of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
The ‘opera bus’, ‘takes to the streets’ all month long, from 18.30 to 20.30. Other events of this campaign include open air opera evenings as well as dance performances at some of Athens’s most busy squares.
