'Opening Nights' Fantasy in Athens

The 17th Athens International Film Festival Opening Nights is this year taking place from September 14 through 25. The Festival includes two competition sections: an International Competition and a Film and Music Competition section; a Panorama of world cinema, featuring films that have attracted audience attention at festivals around the world, as well as lesser known gems that Opening Nights staff have discovered and recommend to their audience.

Documentaries, midnight screenings, premieres of big-budget movies of the coming season complement this year’s programme. Also, 5 retrospectives and special tributes (to Japanese director Yasuzo Masumura, to Dutch pioneer documentary filmmaker Johan van der Keuken, a retrospective focus on Norway, the Déjà-vu project and a "Kafka zone," in collaboration with DESTE Foundation). The Festival was founded in 1995 by the Athens Film Society with the intention of highlighting lesser-known aspects or genres of independent cinema, introducing the audience to some of the best productions of the year and establishing itself as the ideal opening of the upcoming movie season.
