The island was likely named after a legendary general from Crete. It was sometimes referred as Hydroussa due to its ample water resources. A mere two hours by ferry from the port of Rafina in Attica, Andros is still a surprisingly unspoiled-by-tourism Cycladic getaway. It is the northernmost island of the Cyclades and second largest after Naxos. The landscape boasts neoclassical mansions and Venetian towers next to modest but beautifully built stone farmhouses, generous number of picture perfect beaches, extravagant natural beauty and intimate local culture. Mass tourism has been, and still is, discouraged by the islands adamant shipping magnates. However, locals are quite welcome to visitors who wish to preserve the island’s flair of tranquility and elegance.

Many Andros festivals take place during the summer in the villages providing a perfect setting in which you will indulge yourself in the Andriot spirit, food, wine and music from the local folk music players. The most prominent of them is the "Gavriotica". The festivities involve games, folklore exhibitions and music performances with large quantities of local wine and the traditional fish soup called ‘kakavia’ being served throughout the day.
