In the northeastern corner of Greece, is the acritic prefecture of Evros gateway to Europe to and from the East. It is named after the river Evros which is the water boundary between Greece and Turkey.

An area with serene and majestic landscapes throughout the length of the river, while at the "delta" formed by the river at the mouth of the Aegean, is one of the most important wetlands in Europe, and it has also been identified as a park.

The county has major towns such as modern Orestiada, known as the "Paris of Thrace", historical Didymoteicho with many remarkable monuments, which had for some time become the capital of the Ottoman state and Alexandroupolis, modern and spacious, a major commercial and transportation hub of North Greece, which is indeed the most important port of Thrace.
