Greece is the only European country where the turtle Caretta-Caretta nests and the seal Monachus-Monachus (endangered) lives and breeds on the west coast of Zakynthos island. Zante National Marine Park was founded in 1999. Nowadays, its’ beautiful natural environment becomes the most attractive activity for a memorable honeymoon experience. The Marine Park is located at the southeastern part of Zakynthos and contains a marine area (89.2 square km), a land area (14.2 sq. km) and a regional area (31.2 sq. km). The Marine Park is characterized by several types of ecosystems of national and European interest including dune systems, Posidonia underwater meadows (Posidonia oceanica) and coastal ecosystems.
If you want to live a fairytale, you can visit and explore the park and its nesting beaches in order to get surrounded by various small turtles, flora and fauna species, birds (migratory birds, fenikoptera, swans) mammals (hedgehogs, rabbits and “Tursiops Truncatus” dolphins with “nose like a bottle”), reptiles and amphibians (frogs, turtles, iguanas and water snakes). If you visit the nesting beaches you should know that access is permitted between 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM while the number of visitors is limited and highly controlled and restricted. Thus, the earlier you start your excursion the better for your easy and safe access.
