National Gardens – A traditional family habit

The National Garden is a delightful jewelry in the center of Athens and one of the best family activities too. The National Park along with Zappeion Garden (between the National Gardens and Panathenaic Stadium), cover a total area of 285 acres. The “Royal Garden” was designed by Queen Amalia to surround the palace of king Otto (the current parliament). It was renamed to “National Garden” during the republican in 1927. It is open for the public from 7 AM until the dusk while its main entrance is accessed through Amalias Avenue (honor to Queen Amalia for her vision).

There are also another six entrances through Vasilisis Sofias St., Herod Atticus St. (3 entrances, 1 is locked) and Zappeion Gardens. You can visit the Garden and feel like being in paradise. You will be surrounded by ponds with ducks, a small zoo, a lovely cafe as well as a children’s playground and a library too. There are also six historical figure busts while among them you will see Dionysios Solomos bust. We all Greeks, grew up through sunny, Sunday memory walks around the National Gardens. I can’t forget my father who was holding my hand and I wanted to “escape” in order to start running around the park.
