Go downtown to taste “Souvlaki

If you can’t miss the smells of a traditional yummy souvlaki, Monastiraki area is the best place to taste it. Souvlaki is a typical Greek dish that is served predominantly in special places called “souvlatzidika”. It is considered as a fast food choice that is really famous around the world. You can either try grilled kebab accompanied by fresh bread or wrapped in pita souvlaki with gyro (mixed meat)/pork/chicken, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce (local sauce made of yogurt, cucumber, garlic, dill and virgin olive oil). Did you know that the Greek recipe has a long history going back in antiquity?

A typical reference is found in “Dipnosofistes” work written by Athinaios (ancient Greek biologist, gastronomist, dietician and rhetorician). According to him, Igisippos included “kandavlos” in his recipe book that was something like the current souvlaki. He combined pieces of grilled meat, bread, cheese and dill that was served with broth. Souvlaki is also referred to various Roman texts of the 1st century AD but it was also sold in Constantinople. If you find yourself in the centre of Athens, we suggest you to visit Monastiraki square to taste the best quality souvlaki that you have ever tried. There, you can find various shops and satisfy your hunger through the cheapest and most delicious Greek recipe.
