Taygetos is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful mountain in Greece and the most popular around Peloponnese. The mountain’s highest peak (2407 m) is called Profitis Ilias and its name was derived from the homonymous chapel that was built there in ancient times. Have you ever heard about the “Pyramid Phenomenon” in Mt. Profitis Ilias? Profitis Ilias is a pyramid shaped peak where during the rising sun a shadow pyramid appears across the Messinian Gulf.

Each year and more specifically on July 19th (Profitis Ilias name day) mountain lovers and pilgrim groups go to Taygetos to admire the Pyramid Phenomenon. The bell strikes at 2 am and the Divine Liturgy lasts until the sunrise. After that, everyone moves western to enjoy the faded colors of dawn. There are 2 main routes to access Profitis Ilias; The first one starts in Vasilikis forest (Agios Dimitrios – Mouzia – Korifogrammi) while the second in EOS shelter in Laconia or Manganiari source. If you want to be one of those travelers who know how to collect fantastic experiences you need to wake up early in the morning and be there around 6.30 AM. Taygetos Pyramid is a silent, mysterious and harmonious natural miracle that still maintains its secrets jealously.
