Experience a traditional Greek wedding

Rural tourists are real travelers who never choose passive vacations. Instead, they look for authenticity and uniqueness in every form and expression. If you desire an original form of activity in one of the most beautiful and picturesque islands in Greece, then you can join a traditional wedding in Lefkada. Karia village is well known for the representation of its traditional island wedding. This specific event brings great energy and joy to the village that does worth to visit even once in your life time. The traditional custom wedding takes place in the village’s central square through a representation scene of the bride’s and groom’s homes. It takes place each year during August and lasts for four days. On the first day the matchmaking or “proksenio” (προξενιό in Greek) has to be completed.

The parents of the groom choose his future wife and send to the bride’s home a matchmaker to act as a mediator. If the parents of both families agree on that choice, they proceed to the dowry signature. On the second day karfomata take place meaning the counting of the bride's dowry. On the third day a representation of the wedding ceremony in the church takes place while in the fourth and last day the cake ceremony (oil cake) is shared to all guests and visitors. An original rural experience that will always remain in your mind’s album.
