Visit Polyvotis for a Space Odyssey experience

According to the Greek mythology, Nisyros was “born” out of the so called “Gigantomachy”. Poseidon, used his trident to distract a part of Kos island and hurtle it against Polyvotis the giant who finally fell and died. That specific part of Kos was renamed to Nisyros. Sometimes we feel we can still hear the sighs of the wounded giant coming out of the volcano. Polyvotis volcano is located in the “heart” of the island and belongs to one of the largest volcanic centers around Greece. It has a diameter of 260 m. and 30 m. depth. Its oldest rocks are almost 160,000 years old while the youngest count almost 15,000 years.

If local people suggest you to visit “ksefisistres” then Polyvotis should come to your mind whose huffs still come out of the volcano. When you reach the volcano, the powerful scenery will magnetize you. Although the smell of the sulfur is suffocating and the temperature is higher than the rest of the island, you will realize that the sun looks closer to the earth and the yellow scenery with rocks and dust will make you feel like being the protagonist in Space Odyssey movie. Your visit to the volcano should be made in the afternoon since the atmosphere and the heat will exhaust you. Poseidon did a good job finally if we think that he endowed the area with a wild and rare beauty.
