The Greeks of Canada


The greatest concentration of the Greek Community is in the areas of Ontario and Quebec and the main occupations are small, private businesses (restaurants) and commerce. A significant percentage continues with university-level studies and a good number of Greek language and culture schools work to maintain the ties of the community with the metropolis. Many Institutes and University departments concentrate on the study of the Greek culture.

In the early 1970s and during the junta regime in Greece, many intellectuals, political figures and literary figures left Greece and found in Canada "hospitable" home and "fertile" climate to create and develop ideologies which in turn contributed to the overthrow of the regime and the re-establishment of democracy. The many poets and authors who lived in Montreal created an Association of Greek Literature, which became active and prolific.

Zagori: Villages hidden behind mountains

Zagori is an area of great natural beauty and unique architecture in the Pindus Mountains in Epirus in Northwestern Greece. The area is of about 1.000 square kilometers and contains 46 villages. Zagoria villages is called by Greeks “Zagorochoria” meaning the villages behind the mountain.
