Serifos: A gem stone in the Aegean
People love it or hate it. This supposedly has to do with the magnetic fields that are active in the island, due to its massive iron reserves. Filled with iron and minerals, Serifos either attracts, or drives you away. But once a fatal attraction is established, Iron Island will blow you away…!
Dry, arid and completely naked, Serifos may seem at first like any other island in the Cyclades. But once you take a closer look, you realize that its nudity resembles that of a voluptuous female body. Full of curves and intriguing cavities, her body is seductive, soft and beautiful, not to mention… hot! But once you take a dive into the cool pristine waters, you know that that this awkward loving feeling is going to last.
Wild and untamed, the island features an amazing geography, marked by steep mountains and exceptional beaches. Hollow in many places, as a result of the extraction activities that went on for years, Serifos is yet full of beauty and character. The main settlement, clinging from the top of Mount Troulos is one of the most beautiful in the Aegean. The white-washed houses glow as the summer sun casts its rays down. A few hundred steps connect it to the port. At dusk, when it gets cooler, walking down is a great refreshing hike. The port is where most of the action takes place; restaurants, cafés and bars line up by the water to create a pleasant and lively atmosphere. The port is also the starting point for some of the prettiest beaches in the Mediterranean. Just pick the quality of the sand you fancy and go; thick, thin, powder, green, golden, grayish and glittery sand make up the wonderful beach menu of Serifos. Nudist, non-nudist, crowded, remote, nearby, far-off… the beaches are there and they are fantastic!
But even if the beach scene is not that intriguing to you, Serifos has many other goodies to offer: the old stone trails, constructed by the miners during the mining boom in the early 20th century, are hikers’ paradise. The whole island can be explored through this network of trails, offering spectacular views to the nearby islands. The abandoned mines in the southwest are another interesting spot to explore. The run-down settlements, the derailed wagons, the rusting bridges and the dark tunnels, are covered in mystery and magic. Wander around the mines’ remains and feel as if you are in the middle of an amusement park! However, the beautiful semi-precious stones that are stuck inside the rock can be best seen at Sefios’ mining museum. Don’t be tempted to take any pieces of stone along with you, as extracting minerals and stones from the island is illegal and is persecuted.
Take a close look at the wonderful rock formations, watch the semi-precious stones glitter under the sun. Enjoy the clear Greek skies and let the wind caress your hair. Re-establish your contact with nature and feel close to Mother-Earth. Serifos, endowed with extreme natural beauty and intriguing power, is a gemstone itself!
