Ioannina is a wealthy region regarding sightseeing and museums. Most of its prominent sights that you should absolutely discover and explore are the following; The island of Ioannina stands  in the middle of Pamvotis lake and is a picturesque and historical meaning island. It is a place full of pines, cypress trees and perennial along with a nice square and narrow cobbled streets that pass through the picturesque cottages of the village. It is a rare phenomenon of a lake island with almost 100 families within it. The island was inhabited by the Byzantines and acquires 8 remarkable monasteries with great post-Byzantine art murals; The Monastery of St. Nicholas Filanthropinon (1292), the Monastery of St. Nicolas Stratigopoulou, Eleousis Monastery of Gioumaton (15th century), Metamorfosis Sotiros Monastery, Prophet Elias Monastery on the hill, the Monastery of the Assumption, and finally the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon. If you visit the island’s restaurants you can taste “Ouzo” (Greek alcoholic drink) along with eel, trout and frog legs. You can go there from the pier through a boat at a 7 – 8 minute distance.

Pavlos Vrellis’ Wax Museum is located in Bizani village (Ioannina-Arta National Road, 12th km). It is the most famous waxwork museum in the world along with what of Madame Tussauds.

The Archaeological Museum of Ioannina is located in Litharitsia Square. It Includes numerous archaeological findings coming from Epirus’ 4 prefectures (Arta, Ioannina, Preveza, Thesprotia). Moreover, the cave of Perama is located at Perama village (4 km away from the region’s capital). It is a cave of rare beauty with various formations of stalactites and stalagmites. It was accidentally discovered by the area’s residents in 1940, when they were trying to find a shelter against German bombing. Its impressive color formations and spectacular domes will transform your visit to an unforgettable experience.

Ioannina Castle becomes a terrific sight of beauty. It was built in 528 AC and represents the oldest Byzantine castle and largest administrative center of its era. The Greek language was taught and developed within the castle. It is composed of four main parts that does worth to visit; the outside garden, “Islan Tzami”, “Its Kale” and the ancient castle city. Within the castle there are also the following three admirable museums; the Byzantine Museum (sculptures, coins, relics and various other findings 16th-19th century), the Municipal Ethnographic Museum (Greek, Turkish and Jewish community findings) and Fotis Rapakousis Museum. You can also visit the Municipal Gallery of Ioannina, Ottoman library,  Museum of pre-revolutionary period and Louli arcade (Three religious nations existed here, Christians, Jews and Muslims. Initially the arcade operated as an Inn and then became a commercial center).

Ancient Dodoni  is located at the foothill Tomaros, (22 km southwest of Ioannina). According to Aristotle this is an ancient Greek oracle and its place highlights the cradle of Greek civilization. During the excavation period (1875 – 1950) various masterpieces were surfaced such as the theater, the oracle, the parliament and the prytaneum. Today the space revives during the summer months, with ancient tragedy and comedy performances.
