The Environment, Energy and Climatic Change Ministry announced an international open-door call for hydrocarbon exploration in three areas of Greece: the Gulf of Patras, Katakolo in Ilia Region and in Ioannina in Epirus. Projections suggest that the three regions combined could yield a potential of 250-300 million barrels of oil over a period of 15-20 years.
On January 3, Deputy Environment, Energy and Climatic Change Minister Yiannis Maniatis briefed Prime Minister Lucas Papademos about the hydrocarbon exploration programme and the Hellenic Hydrocarbon Management Company that is to be established in due time. Maniatis said that he expects the first "symbolic" oil rig to be in place by the end of the year.
Additionally in the energy field, Foreign Minister Stavros Dimas had a meeting with the political leadership of the Environment, Energy and Climatic Change Ministry to discuss energy issues and coordination between the two ministries.
