By October 2013, the National Museum of Contemporary Art will have been transferred to its new permanent premises after the reconstruction of the old Fix brewery. The long deserted Fix brewery, a remarkable industrial building in the centre of Athens, offers spaces of a total of 20,000 m2 and of a total volume of 90,000 m³.
At the dawn of the 20th century, when Karolos Fix decided to take over his father beer factory - originally founded in 1863 - he picked a location at the west bank of Ilissos river, which he had considered ideal because it was close to the Acropolis and not far from the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Architect Takis Zenetos, a pioneer figure of the post-war architecture in Greece, delivered an admirable urban style building and the Fix dynasty thrived through the century. "By the time the new premises are finished, a remarkable nucleus of works of art by Greek and international artists will have been developed" says Anna Kafetsi, Director of the Museum. The constructors of the Museum will be the ones who completed the new Acropolis Museum.
