Greece’s National Procurement Commission held the third electronic tender yesterday, on November 14, in an effort to curtail state hospital pharmaceutical expenditure. The choice of lower-priced generic drugs over brand-name drugs was proved critical – according to a press release, the Ministry of Health & Social Solidarity, had originally budgeted € 5.2 million, yet the final cost was € 420.000 million.
Health Minister Andreas Loverdos stressed: "our struggle has borne results for the Greek taxpayer, we achieved an amazing reduction of 92 % and at the same time we pursued a European goal, the promotion of generic drugs."
