Following the decision to turn the Ai Stratis island into a "Green island," another study is being put forward concerning the island complex of Fourni, in northeastern Aegean Sea, between Samos, Ikaria and Patmos.
The Fourni complex includes 25 isles and rocky islets, an area totaling 45.7 km² with a 139.5 km-long coastline. Only two of the islands are permanently inhabited: Fourni, where the main port lies, and Thymaina.
The project -which if selected will be co-funded by the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF)- focuses on environmental actions aiming at bringing out the special characteristics of the islands, at contributing to their sustainable development, and at creating innovative approaches that would form part of a wider project of sustainable development in the area.
The project involves, among other things, the energy self-sufficiency of the islands through the installation of photovoltaics as well as an ecological way for waste management, in this case wastewater treatment with the use of aquatic plants and flowers, such as reeds and rush.
On a nearby rocky islet, across from the wastewater purification installation plans are being made for a botanical garden, which would include Mediterranean plants such as carob trees.
