Aegean islands float on the deep blue sea, some like white rocks, others covered by dense greenery, and all bathed in the unique Greek light that inspired so many poets since Homer. Even today, the same light that reflects so strongly against the white-washed churches and houses, attracts painters and photographers.
However, this sun washed beauty of the Aegean islands not only attracts artists, but also, those seeking the dolce vita found in Myconos, or the delight of the beaches and mellow summer nights by a warm, embracing sea experienced in islands like Alonisos and Paros, to mention only two of them. Then again there is the attraction of the extraordinary, fiery presence of Santorini, the Volcano island, so popular that its real estate values are amongst the highest in the whole of Greece.
Or Lesvos in the northern Aegean, with its vast olive groves, its petrified forest, the birthplace of Sapfo, the first poetess, whose songs on love are still inspiring generations of lovers.
The Dodecanese in the south east, with Rhodes at the helm, are like stepping stones between Crete and Asia Minor, while the Cyclades in the centre of the Aegean, including Myconos the darling of the jet set and the Holy island of Tinos with the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, are like a fleet protecting the Greek mainland. The Sporades in the north Aegean, Skopelos, Skiathos, Alonisos and Skiros, lie next to Thesalia, center of the Greek mainland.
