Delos is one of the most awe inspiring archeological sites of Greece. The whole island is an uninhabited shrine. It was a sacred place since 477 B.C. when the dominant Athenians decreed that no one would be born or die on this island, a rule that seems to be observed even to today. The whole island is rich in significant ruins from the famous lions of the Lions Way to the Temple of Apollo and of particular magnificence, the beautiful mosaics of the house of the dolphins. Apart from Delos there are many more significant ancient sites to be found on the Aegean islands. Thira, a prehistoric Pompei on Santorini is the most important prehistoric settlement found anywhere in the Eastern Mediterranean and well preserved. Most Aegean islands have museums housing their local ancient glory including such significant pieces as the statue of the Kouros in Samos.
