This is definitely a gourmet's area, a place for those of refined and fastidious tastes. The wines of Samos and Santorini have been legendary ever since ancient times and continue to hold their own. Some of Santorini's specialties are "fava" (a delicious split pea puree with lots of excellent extra virgin olive oil and freshly chopped onion), wild rabbit casserole, fish with capers, fresh goat cheeses and the local sweet known as the "melitnia" from meli (honey). In Santorini, wine tasting is available in six different wineries and it is most certainly worth a visit to some of them. Samos is famous for its sweet wine and for its ouzo (as is the island Mitilini in the north eastern Aegean). One can find from simple tavernas on the beach serving local delicacies, to high class high quality restaurants predominantly on Myconos serving anything one's heart (or one's stomach) may desire.
