The old quarters of the major towns of Hania, Rethimno and Iraklio have a distinctive Venetian look distinguished by the Loggias of Iraklio and Rethimno, the old walls of these cities and the very active harbors of Iraklio and Hania. The mountain villages also offer beautiful pictures of rustic peasant houses and winding cobble stone roads with a dangerously diminishing population of donkeys clambering up them with their loads of freshly gathered olives, or other products. The remoter the villages, the more likely it is that the visitor will be offered a glass of raki, wine or a sweet at the local kafenion from the innate hospitality that remains so strong in these people. One should not forget that Zeus was born on this island and Xenios Zeus (Hospitable Zeus) is still very much worshiped, and practiced, here.
