Anywhere one goes in Crete, one is bound to encounter beautiful beaches, from the long sandy golden beaches of the north to the endless gray, almost black, pebbly beaches of the south of the island, where a kind of white lily sprouts from the sand in spring. With 155 kilometers of beach, even in full season, one can always be sure of finding a deserted beach to enjoy a voluptuous swim alone. But Crete isn't only just beaches. There is the tremendous gorge of Samaria in the Hania area, winding from the plateau of Omalos down to the beaches of Agia Fotia in the south (a five hour walk worth every minute), there is the Dikteon Andron Cave where Zeus was born, there is the Plateau of Lasithi with its windmills, the palm trees of Vai and endless mountain walks.
