Born in Githio, he migrated to New York in 1930 to become a prominent figure of post-war American art, using fluorescent neon tubes to illuminate his abstractions.
His work is a combination of lyrical abstraction and minimalism, with the serenity that the light generates. His neon tubes operate as a type of commentary -visual and philosophical- of the subject that they accompany as they define a ceiling area, walls, rooms or movement towards the exterior of a building. His installations often convey a mystical, religious feeling through the unrecognisable forms he depicts. He creates a dialogue of color, geometrical shapes and neon lines.
His installations are found in many museums in the US and Europe.
