  Athens, the Birthplace of Democracy
It is hardly by chance that Athens has been a major city of the world in one way or another for the last 6,000 years. It was once the city of light radiating its influence, knowledge, culture and indeed charm all over the civilized world...
•  History
Athens is the city of the Goddess Athena, the Goddess of wisdom and indeed of impregnability (a symbol for the invincibility of the city), who bestowed an olive tree, symbol of peace and prosperity, as her gift.
•  The Acropolis
For many people, Athens is identified with the Acropolis. Designed by the architect Iktinos and erected during the Golden Age, its buildings remain a magnificent monument.
•  Architecture
The center of Athens is not such a large area and it is well worth taking several walks to really savor its charms. In the middle of Panepistimiou Street, which connects Syntagma and Omonia Squares, considered the heart of the city, are three splendid neoclassical buildings, the Academy, the University and the Library built between 1859 - 1887 by the Danish architect Theophilus Hansen.
•  The City s Charm
Off the beaten tourist track is the Exarhia area, a bit intimidating in the manner of Soho in London perhaps, but by no means dangerous to walk around in.
•  Beyond Athens
Once in Athens, one must take the time to visit the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. The coastal area one has to drive through to get there provides many restaurants and beaches, so a day trip is advisable.
•  Food and Wine
Traditional Greek food is best enjoyed at local little tavernas that do not cater to tourists and there are plenty of them all over town and in the suburbs. There are also many quality restaurants also specializing in Greek and international cuisine.
