| | Corfu and the Ionian Islands, the Land of Beauty and Inspiration |
|
|
It is perhaps not solely for geographical reasons that in the eighteenth century Corfu was the first stop in Greece for those making the famous "Grand Tour" of Italy and Greece. It has attracted and inspired artists...

History |
| If it wasn’t for Homer, we probably wouldn’t associate the Ionian Islands with Ancient Greece very much, but the myth of Odysseus- his return to Ithaki, his sojourn at Kerkira where he met and fell in love with Nafsika- is so strong that we may be tempted to leave Corfu’s history there. |

| |
Identity and Charms |
| Like the rest of Greece, Corfu is blessed with the dazzling light that inspires talent and gives birth to beauty and creativity. |
|
| |
Architecture |
| All over the area one has the impression that the place is bursting with creativity and life, yet it has certain grandeur to it not encountered in many other parts of Greece. |
|
| |
Cultural Heritage |
| Always a place of culture and letters, Corfu was the site of the first Modern Greek University to be established in 1823, the Ionian Academy. |

| |
The Phenomenon of the Three Saints |
| Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakinthos, the three largest of the seven Ionian Islands, each has its own special saint; Saint Spiridon, Saint Gerasimos and Saint Dionisios, respectively. |
|
| |
Cuisine - Wines |
| Not surprisingly, the cuisine of Corfu and the Ionian Islands also reflects the rich mixture of civilizations that settled on its soil through the ages. |
|
| |
Beaches - Landmarks |
| Paleokastritsa, to the north west of the island, is one of the most beautiful spots of the island, though its beach does perhaps leave something to be desired. |
|
| |
Kefalonia - Ithaki |
| Corfu is perhaps the queen of the Ionian islands (and indeed the island the King chose to have his country house on!) but all seven of these islands are of exquisite beauty with beautiful beaches, splendid architecture and warm and hospitable people. |
|
| |
How to Get There |
| There is a good airport on the island with flights from Athens and Thessaloniki, and a large number of charter flights, or stop overs from regular flights, from all over the world. |
